"Good enough isn't an excuse. Good enough is a definition." Initially, it seemed like just another eloquent saying but upon further contemplation, I realized its profound implications for managers and leaders.

Often, we mistake 'good enough' as a stopgap solution, an excuse to avoid the necessary hard work, or a compromise on quality, as if we're sliding by with a minimally acceptable standard. The phrase 'good enough' inherently suggests an underlying sense of underachievement, a reluctance to strive for excellence. But that's not the essence of Seth Godin's perspective.

When Seth Godin says "Good enough is a definition," he is compelling us to redefine the notion of 'good enough.' Instead of viewing it as a ceiling to our efforts or a compromise on the quality, he encourages us to see 'good enough' as a starting line, a foundational standard upon which we build our work.

For leaders and managers, this is a significant distinction to grasp. Instilling the notion that 'good enough' is not an excuse, but the standard, transforms how our teams perceive their work. It sets a bar of quality that everything should meet at the very least and becomes a launchpad for innovation, creativity, and continuous improvement.

It changes our teams' mindset from 'doing just enough to get by' to 'doing the best we can, and then some.' It creates an environment where mediocrity has no place, and excellence becomes the norm. By embracing this definition, we can drive our teams to surpass expectations consistently, not out of compulsion, but because they understand and believe in the value of delivering quality.

This concept of 'good enough' transcends just our work outputs and has a broader application in our decision-making processes as well. In a world of constant change and endless possibilities, perfection can be the enemy of progress. If we're always waiting for the 'perfect' solution or the 'perfect' time, we might find ourselves stuck in analysis paralysis. Instead, aiming for 'good enough,' the best decision or action in the given circumstances, allows us to move forward and iterate along the way.

So, as leaders, let's redefine 'good enough.' Let's make it our standard, our starting point, not our ceiling. Let's inspire our teams to see 'good enough' not as an excuse to underperform, but as a motivation to consistently perform at their best and keep improving. After all, good leadership isn't about accepting the status quo, it's about setting the bar high and inspiring others to leap over it.
<p class="button-wrapper" let into it."

Imagine a room filled with blaring megaphones, each emitting a different noise, vying for your attention. That room symbolizes our lives in today's fast-paced world, where distractions are plentiful and quiet is a luxury.

Are the activities you participate in, the relationships you nurture, and the thoughts you engage with adding value to your life? Or are they simply adding to the cacophony, pulling you away from the serenity and balance you yearn for?

Sometimes, being ruthless isn't about being harsh; it's about caring for your well-being. It's about selectively muting those megaphones, turning down the volume on distractions, and stepping outside the room into the sunshine of peace and tranquility.

I encourage you to reflect on this as we embrace the coming week. Perhaps there are sounds in your life that are more grating than soothing. Maybe it's time to step outside, to leave behind the unnecessary noise, and embrace the serene melody of the world outside.

Remember, every 'yes' to one noise may mean a 'no' to the soothing silence or the gentle sounds of nature. Choose wisely, and know that it's okay to say 'no' when it opens the door to your peaceful sanctuary.

<p class="button-wrapper" tend to INTERACT with the junk, with the "stuff" of each other and hold SPACE for each other's magnificence and beauty. What shifts in our interactions when we INTERACT with each other's magnificence and hold SPACE for all the junk?

It's a simple question that carries profound meaning. Often, we find ourselves interacting with the junk, the surface-level aspects of each other, while failing to recognize and hold space for each other's magnificence and beauty.

Consider for a moment what would shift in our interactions if we chose to focus on each other's magnificence instead. How would our relationships transform if we held space for all the junk, the imperfections that make us human? These questions invite us to reflect upon our interactions and challenge us to create a more compassionate and uplifting environment.

Imagine a world where we interacted with each other's magnificence. In this world, we would be more inclined to see the best in each other. Our kindness, compassion, and understanding would prevail, fostering growth and harmony. We would build one another up instead of tearing each other down, recognizing and celebrating the unique qualities that make us shine.

Now, let's consider what holding space for all the junk means. By doing so, we cultivate patience, forgiveness, and understanding. We acknowledge that we are all works in progress, filled with flaws and imperfections. When we hold space for each other's junk, we create a safe haven where authenticity and vulnerability can thrive.

The impact of interacting with magnificence and holding space for the junk cannot be underestimated. It has the power to reshape our world into one that is more connected, compassionate, and loving. Together, we can foster an inclusive society where everyone feels safe, loved, and accepted.

So, I encourage you to embrace this perspective in your daily interactions. The next time you engage with someone, consciously choose to see their magnificence rather than focusing on their junk. Observe how this shift changes the way you relate to one another and the deeper connections it fosters.

Thanks for reading The Unlocker! This is because employees are more likely to be engaged and productive when they feel valued and appreciated.

A growing body of research supports the idea that tenderness is a key ingredient for successful leadership. For example, a Harvard Business School study found that leaders perceived as being compassionate were more likely to have high-performing teams.

Another study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, found that employees who felt supported by their leaders were more likely to be engaged in their work and to have lower levels of stress.

As Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Tenderness is the truest expression of strength." This is because tenderness allows us to connect with others on a deeper level, to show them that we care, and to build strong relationships. When we are tender with others, we are also being strong for them.

So, what does it mean to be a tender leader? It means being able to connect with your employees on a human level. It means being understanding and empathetic and being willing to show your employees that you care about them.

There are many ways to show tenderness as a leader. Here are a few examples:

Be mindful of your employees' needs. Take the time to understand what your employees are going through, both personally and professionally.

Be supportive and encouraging. Let your employees know that you believe in them and that you are there to help them succeed.

Be forgiving. Everyone makes mistakes. When your employees make a mistake, don't be too quick to judge them. Instead, offer them your support and help them learn from their mistakes.

Be respectful. Treat your employees with the same respect that you would want to be treated with.

Being a tender leader doesn't mean that you have to be soft or weak. It simply means that you can connect with your employees on a human level and that you are willing to show them that you care. When you are a tender leader, you create a more supportive, resilient, and innovative work environment.

In her article, "Tenderness As Leadership", Susan Greene shares her own personal experience with the power of tenderness in the workplace. After suffering a concussion, Greene was forced to slow down and care for herself. This experience gave her a new appreciation for the importance of tenderness for herself and others.

Greene's experience is a reminder that tenderness is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of strength and resilience. When we can be tender with ourselves and others, we create a more compassionate and supportive world.

In Japan, a concept called "Kokoro" refers to the heart or soul. Kokoro is more than just emotion; it is also about understanding and compassion. In the workplace, Kokoro can be seen as a way of leading that is based on understanding and caring for employees.

Tender leaders who embody Kokoro can connect with their employees on a deeper level. They can understand what their employees are going through and what they need to succeed. They can also show their employees that they care about them and are there to support them.

Leaders embodying Kokoro create a more supportive and compassionate work environment. Employees feel valued and appreciated and are more likely to be engaged in their work. This can lead to increased productivity, innovation, and employee satisfaction.

If you want to be a more effective leader, I encourage you to embrace the power of tenderness. Be mindful of your employees' needs, supportive, encouraging, forgiving, and respectful. When you do these things, you will create a more supportive, resilient, and innovative workplace.

Share

Subscribe now

Sometimes You Have Etc. Leaders must navigate the complexities and uncertainties of managing remote teams, ensuring accountability, making informed decisions, and upholding ethical standards. In this context, a simple yet profound quote by Fatima Alves, "sometimes you have etc. sometimes etc. has you," can provide valuable insights into the delicate balance of power, control, and adaptation required for effective leadership.

Leadership and the Ebb and Flow of Control

Fatima Alves' quote suggests a natural ebb and flow to life, where sometimes we are in control, and other times, external circumstances seem to take the reins. This idea is particularly relevant to leaders, who must recognize that they cannot control everything and must learn to adapt and pivot when necessary.

Remote teams, for instance, pose unique challenges for leaders. They must navigate time zones, cultural differences, and communication barriers while ensuring the team remains cohesive and productive. Leaders can more effectively manage remote teams by understanding that sometimes they have control over situations (e.g., setting clear expectations and guidelines), and other times they must relinquish control (e.g., trusting team members to make decisions).

Accountability in Leadership

Accountability is an essential component of successful leadership. It is the willingness to accept responsibility for one's actions and the consequences that follow. However, Alves' quote reminds us that there will be times when leaders must hold others accountable and times when they must hold themselves accountable. This balance is crucial in creating a culture of responsibility and trust within the team.

For remote teams, leaders must establish clear communication channels and reporting structures to ensure everyone is held accountable. Regular check-ins, performance evaluations, and feedback sessions can help leaders stay connected to their team and promptly address any concerns or issues.

Decision-Making in a World of Uncertainty

In a world filled with ambiguity and constant change, decision-making can be challenging. Alves' quote highlights the importance of recognizing that sometimes we have the information and resources necessary to make decisions. Other times, we must rely on our instincts and trust in the process.

For leaders, this means being open to change, adaptable, and willing to embrace uncertainty. They must learn to make decisions based on the information available, while also being prepared to course-correct when new information or circumstances arise. By acknowledging that sometimes they have control and others do not, leaders can make more effective and informed decisions, even in times of uncertainty.

Ethics: Balancing Power and Responsibility

Ethics play a critical role in leadership, particularly as organizations grapple with the rapid pace of change and the impact of technology on society. Alves' quote serves as a reminder that leaders must strike a delicate balance between exercising power and upholding ethical principles.

Sometimes, leaders have the power to make decisions that significantly impact their organizations, team members, and the wider community. In these moments, they must use their power responsibly and consider the ethical implications of their choices. Other times, leaders may find themselves at the mercy of external forces, and their role is to advocate for ethical practices and hold others accountable for their actions.

In conclusion, Fatima Alves' insightful quote reminds us of the delicate balance between control and adaptation. This notion is particularly pertinent to leadership in today's complex and ever-changing world. As leaders face the challenges of managing remote teams, ensuring accountability, making informed decisions, and upholding ethical standards, it is essential to recognize that there will be moments of control and moments where external forces take over. Embracing this ebb and flow, and continually adapting to new circumstances can help leaders navigate these challenges with resilience and poise. Although this concept may seem obvious, it is a powerful reminder for leaders to stay grounded, adaptable, and committed to fostering a culture of responsibility, trust, and ethical decision-making within their teams and organizations.

Thanks for reading The Unlocker! hilarious pranks that have been played on us, and the ones we've played on others. But today, we want to dive deeper into the concept of "fooling" and explore how it relates to our lives. Inspired by the insightful musings of our friend, Cynthia Darst, we invite you to ponder these questions: Where are we fooling ourselves? Who is fooling us? And what might become available if we allowed more of our inner fool to show?

Where are we fooling ourselves?

Every day, we tell ourselves little white lies, half-truths, and fibs that help us get through the day. We convince ourselves we're too busy to exercise or that we'll start that new project tomorrow. But, are these narratives serving us, or are they simply self-imposed deceptions? This April Fool's Day, let's take a moment to reflect on the stories we tell ourselves and whether they're helping or hindering our personal growth.

Who is fooling us?

We live in a world filled with misinformation, advertisements, and social media personas. It's essential to be aware of the sources that may be misleading us or pushing their own agenda. Be a critical thinker and question the information you consume. After all, the best way to avoid being the fool is to be an informed and discerning individual.

“We’re fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance.”

~Awa Dance Festival Song Lyric

Embrace your inner fool!

Now, let's switch gears and consider a different angle. The fool archetype has existed in literature, theater, and mythology since ancient times. The fool, often seen as a wise and unfiltered observer, can teach us valuable lessons about ourselves and the world. So, what might be available if we allowed more of our inner fool to show?

Authenticity: Embracing your inner fool means being genuine and true to yourself. Let go of the need to impress others and simply be you – quirks, eccentricities, and all!

Creativity: Fools are known for their improvisational skills and imaginative ideas. Allowing your inner fool to come forward can open up new avenues of creative expression and problem-solving.

Fearlessness: Fools are unafraid to take risks and challenge the status quo. By embracing your inner fool, you can face your fears, try new things, and boldly step outside of your comfort zone.

Humor and playfulness: Life can be serious, but the fool reminds us to find the humor in everyday situations and not take ourselves too seriously. Inject some playfulness into your life to boost your mood and improve your relationships.

So this April Fool's Day, let's not only celebrate the pranks and laughter but also take the opportunity to reflect on our own self-deceptions and embrace the wisdom that can be found in our inner fool. Who knows, you might just discover a whole new world of possibilities!

Wishing you a playful, thought-provoking, and foolishly fantastic April Fool's Day!

Thanks for reading The Unlocker! (Capitalizing complexity: Insights from the Global Chief Executive Officer Study). Two challenges emerged at the top of the list: 1) escalating complexity, and 2) building the creative capacity and leadership to deal with it. These findings were consistent in the 2012 and 2014 CEO studies as well.

First let's look at escalating complexity.

The Boston Consulting Group explains it this way:

Managing complexity and it's related cost is a growing challenge for companies. The increasingly global nature of business gives rise to diverse customers and markets, convoluted supply chains, and vast supplier networks. The trend toward product customization allows customers to have it their way but wreaks havoc on production schedules and inventory management. Parts and components proliferate on warehouse shelves, sophisticated technologies and formulas underlie even the most basic products, and our gadgets have more features and functionality than ever before. The cost of this increasing complexity is often hidden, but they are almost always a significant drain on profitability.

The growth of complexity is reflected in businesses’ goals. Today companies, on average, set themselves six times as many performance requirements as they did in 1955, the year the Fortune 500 list was created. Back then, CEOs committed to four to seven performance imperatives; today they commit to 25 to 40. And many of those requirements appear to be in conflict: Companies want to satisfy their customers, who demand low prices and high quality. They seek to customize their offerings for specific markets and standardize them for the greatest operating return. They want to innovate and be efficient.

At the Boston Consulting Group, they’ve created an “index of complicatedness,” based on surveys of more than 100 U.S. and European listed companies, which measures just how big the problem is. The survey results show that over the past 15 years, the amount of procedures, vertical layers, interface structures, coordination bodies, and decision approvals needed in each of those firms has increased by anywhere from 50% to 350%. According to their analysis over a longer time horizon, complicatedness increased by 6.7% a year, on average, over the past five decades.

The second challenge as identified in the CEO study, is building the creative capacity and the leadership to deal with the escalating complexity.

Bob Anderson in his book, Mastering Leadership, describes what he calls the Leadership Imperative. The Leadership Imperative is simply this:

“The development of leadership effectiveness must, at a minimum, keep pace with the rate of change and the rate of escalating complexity. Not to keep pace with the rate of escalating complexity is to become less relevant and effective. If the challenges we face are more complex than we are, our leadership is inadequate and a competitive disadvantage.”

Bob Anderson goes on to say, “In business, collective leadership effectiveness is underutilized and rarely capitalize upon. Most development focuses on individual leaders, ignoring collective effectiveness and the leadership system.”

Take a moment and think about your direct reports. If I were to ask you about the collective leadership effectiveness of your team what would you say? More than likely you thought about the majority of your team that is effective and convinced your self they covered for the team member(s) that is ineffective. Unfortunately, research does not support your conclusion. Management expert, Peter Senge, notes that the collective intelligence and performance of most groups is well below the average intelligence and performance of the members. We usually dumb down when we come together. We act at the lowest common denominator.

Let me bottom line this for you. Your least effective team member IS your collective leadership effectiveness. Does this concern you? If this is true, do you still have a leadership advantage?

As business continues to escalate in complexity it is imperative that you increase the individual and group collective leadership effectiveness. Your ability to develop leaders capable of navigating in an increasingly complex world is a strategic priority and a competitive advantage.

Collective effectiveness carries the day.

Here are some questions to consider:

Is your leadership developing at the pace to stay relevant? How do you know?

Are you tracking the effectiveness of leadership over time to gauge improvement?

Is your leadership a competitive advantage or disadvantage?

How effective is your personal and collective leadership? How do you know?

Leadership development programs of today are not up to this challenge. Most approaches to developing leaders focus primarily on developing competency and capability. These approaches are insufficient in a world of escalating complexity. We need to develop capability, to be sure, but we need to do much more. We need to develop the complexity of mind of the leader because, if the complexities of the challenges we face are more complex than we are, we are outmatched. But if we can evolve the complexity of the mind of the leader, to be equal to the complexity of the challenge, we can lead.

Thanks for reading The Unlocker!
